GRBLDuino - Troubleshooting Steps?

Hi,
Need to run a 5 stepper cnc, dual x, dual y, and z axis setup. Also need limit sw of at least 5 home positions. Familiar with 3d printers, had DRV8825s, A49988and a genuine Arduino 2560 Mega, 12v and 24v PS, what could be simpler than adding a GRBLDuino Mega v1 and away I go?
Bought the kit, soldered it up, the USB case is separated from underside of shield with M/F spacers, setup the vrefs conservatively, (0.5 to 0.75). Have verified the colours of coils with DVM, should only be dealing with direction of rotation issues. I have not attached anything but power to the shield, no other wires. Tried both 12V and 24V power as well.
Loaded up the 1.1e hex file recommended here. (http://blog.eccentricworkshop.com/tag/grblduino/ and attach id 612) I can talk to the Arduino just fine with UGS, but whether by setup or the jog menu, I get no response at all, the steppers do not seem to power up when out of idle. Setup wizard of UGS should do the trick. But there is a "configuration file" part of the wizard that I have not touched. Can someone tell me if I need GRBLDuino specific entries in the configuration file?
Also note, I have tried the jumper settings as ABC independent, and XA, YB, Z and C independent, and zero config jumpers. I have tried with 5/6 DRV8825, or just 1 in X. Also tried some A4988s as well. Mixed them too. Always making sure the enable pin is in the correct location.
As part of experimenting, decided to try a 6 axis mega hex here (fill this in later...). Now the steppers make a small clunk, but are locked when not in idle and will not turn. Out of idle they spin.
Any suggestions appreciated. Can put photos up later.
Thanks.
Brian.
